Into the Future: Design Trends for 2020

Hindsight may be 20/20, but today, let’s try foresight.

As summer slips into fall and the kids head back to school, it’s the time of year when we all start looking ahead – to our fall projects, to the holiday season, and to the joys that next year will bring. Here at Jan Hiltz Interiors LLC, we’re also starting to look ahead, forecasting the design trends that seem set to make a big splash in the coming year.

Of course, nobody knows what the future will bring – but it can be fun to speculate! That’s why we’ve rounded up a list of three of the most promising design trends for 2020. Check them out below, and let us know what you think!

1. Natural Beauty and Going Green

Regardless of what you might think of the color that sits between blue and yellow on the color wheel, there’s no denying that green design is in. In 2020, we expect to see a lot more use of natural materials and sustainable products. Recycling in particular is in, as interior designers seek ever-more creative ways to turn what once was trash into treasure.

2. Work-Leisure Fusion

If you can do your job with just a laptop and an internet connection, why wouldn’t you work from home? Interior decorators are fast recognizing this new reality and shifting their designs to account for it. In the coming year, we think we’ll see many more designers crafting creative working spaces right within the home. From innovative plugs in kitchen islands to an office with storage spaces, we’re excited to see what’s coming next.

3. Neutral Palettes

Neutrals go with everything. We think that neutrals will stay popular in 2020 because they make such a good backdrop. Clean and refreshing, neutral colors make it easy for individuals to showcase their personalities and favorite colors in their spaces. Plus, neutrals are great for people who are considering selling their homes in the near future.

These are just a few of the trends we see making a splash in 2020 – there are many more out there, and we’re sure you have your own thoughts. So if you’re considering hopping onto one of these trends in 2020 or forging your own path, let us know! Our team would be thrilled to help you bring your interior design dreams to life.

Can An Interior Designer Help Me Sell My Home?

It’s a no brainer that remodeling even one room in your home increases its value. Many homeowners take care of old, outdated, or damaged fixtures before they sell so that, when it comes time to put their house on the market, there is a much higher chance of selling it quicker at a higher price.

The same logic applies to your home’s interior design. Ask any realtor and it’s likely that they will tell you that a professionally designed home becomes highly sought after. But how exactly does the right color or layout impact your resell value?

Imagine this: you are taking a tour through a new house. You find that the space feels cramped and too dark. Maybe the current floor plan leaves you feeling anxious to move things around. You may be unable to place your finger on it, but something just feels off or missing here.end table with painting

All of these factors can leave a feeling of discomfort with buyers, leaving them to continue their search elsewhere. In this way, it’s quite similar to a potential buyer noticing a leaky faucet or missing wall tiles; it’s potential work and investments that they would rather not have to make after purchasing.

A home that has been professionally designed can make all the difference when it comes to your resale price and how long your home is on the market for. While you may feel the need to restyle every room or complete a full remodel, it isn’t always necessary. In fact, even simple furniture rearrangements can make a large impact! Working with the space that you have and maximizing it by furniture placement can really make all the difference.

An interior designer will review your entire home and work with you to create a plan of action. As professionals, we know what appeals to buyers and what will take your home to the next level. From simple updates to major remodels, know that every penny spent becomes an investment that will save you money and time down the line.

The Importance of Interior Design

How can an interior designer help me?

It’s a common belief that interior design is simply knowing what styles and items go together in your home. While that is, of course, a major aspect of interior design, the concept itself is much more complex than that.

Interior design is an art, with each room serving as a blank canvas. Our job is to help you make the most use of the space allotted, whether that be your living room, bedroom, or sunroom, and do so in a way that elevates your own living experience.

We take general aesthetic pieces, furniture, and art, and combine them into a functional space. The end design represents you, your tastes, and the desired atmosphere that you want your space to provide to guests.

Many homeowners struggle to bring forth that creativity on their own. Through the right interior designer, you’ll be able to share your ideas and have them brought to life before your eyes! It’s important that you play a role in your own interior design. Your concept preferences and opinions are what inspire us to make the creative choices that we do.

How do accessories help in interior design?

Without even the smallest details present in a painting or other piece of art, the entire work feels incomplete. The same holds true in interior design. It relates back to using your space to the fullest; leaving too much white/blank space affects the overall ambience and feeling of a room.

Even the most minimalist designs make use of some type of accessories. From throw pillows to rugs and knick-knacks to coasters, all of these elements are integral to the overall design. These small details bring a room together!

Plan Accordingly!

Space planning is an indispensable part of interior design.

When planning the placement of furniture and other items in a room, there is naturally only a finite amount of space. Therefore, space planning is an extremely important part of the interior design process, as it allows for the best functioning depending on the purpose of the room.

The first thing to consider is the room’s structure. Think of the focal points in the room. Is there a fireplace? How about a big, beautiful bay window? If the focal points in a room are unbalanced, you can add to empty spaces to give it more balance. Of course, this is personal style as well. Some people may find a certain arrangement claustrophobic that others may love.

Another thing to consider is the amount of light available in the room as opposed to the amount of light you desire in it. If a space lacks windows, you’ll need to leave space for lamps and the like if you want the space to be well-lit.

Be sure to avoid clutter in any space, as it can not only block traffic flow through a room but also make it seem smaller than it really is. And speaking of, square patterns on the walls can give a space a larger appearance.
